Seeing and being seen

In a comment on a previous post, Rick wrote "Nearly every piece about nudism in the mainstream media contains some reference or snide remark about people they'd rather not 'see' naked. It's not about 'seeing' people naked. It's about accepting people for who they are, without all the added crap that often comes with the clothing. It's about comfort, acceptance, and going beyond the superficial."

Rick has it right on the button. In the modern world, it seems we have gone mad over appearance. This was driven home to me when my mother suffered two major operations for oral cancer. It left her with large parts of her jaw and tongue missing, it is a hideous disease, but was she still my beautiful Mum? Of course she was.

Social naturism is indeed about accepting people for what they are not what they look like. We should all learn to ignore the superficial, the glossy magazines that proclaim the "importance" of this or that style, and to see the value of the inner person. The trouble is, that takes some effort, it requires the confidence to make a judgement not guided by some fashion but on how people behave. Fashion is for the sheepish who give away their independence of mind to shallow people obsessed with appearance and who are largely ignorant of the wider issues of humanity.
